Day 1 - Chronicles of Crime 2400

ree

What better way to kick off the festive season than a deep dive into the future to root out crime and corruption? The Millennium series of games set in the Chronicles of Crime system follow a series of crimes across time starting in Paris in the 15th Century and culminating in 25th Century.

Each box changes the setting from medieval times to victorian era Paris and finally a cyberpunk future. However each box also changes up the formula with 2400 probably bringing about the biggest changes.

The core Chronicles of Crime mechanics are still present. You still use your phone to scan QR codes that move you through locations and allow you to talk to suspects, while also exploring the crime scenes in VR. However 2400 introduces new virtual locations and cybernetic implants.

You can log on to the virtual network from any location but you need to be careful, doing so will leave your real world body vulnerable and in our play we were nearly robbed by logging on in the downtown market district. The cool thing about the virtual locations is that you are meeting with avatars which could be anyone, perhaps they are people half the world away with an internet connection, but maybe they are people you've met and interacted with in the real world too?

Meanwhile your cybernetic rig allows you to use mods to affect the game. These work in a similar way to the additional actions in Chronicles of Crime Noir but they give you new ways to resolve encounters. For example you can use your scanner to see what mods your suspects have, or use your electro shock implant to disable an aggressive suspect.

However while these changes are fun for fans of the system, the core gameplay loop isn't really any different than any previous Chronicles of Crime entry, so if you don't like the core game this isn't going to change your mind. However if you do and you want a more cyberpunk theme then Lucky Duck Games have got you covered.

And while I've had fun playing through the Millennium series individually, the thing I am really looking forward to are the Chronicles of Time cases that bring all three time periods together...
